How do I Incorporate Flannel Boards into Kindergarten Literacy Centers?

    • 1). Read a book with your class and discuss the storyline in terms of sequence of events.

    • 2). Set up a literacy center with a flannel board and cut-outs that correspond with the book you just read. You can find flannel board materials at most education resource supply stores. Place three vertical lines onto the flannel board to divide it into three equal sections. Place the numbers 1, 2, and 3 in the top portion of each corresponding section.

    • 3). Place a copy of the book that you read with the class in the literacy center as well.

    • 4). Instruct the children to place flannel cut-outs onto the board in the correct sections to show what happened in the story. Explain how the "1" section represents what happened first, the "2" shows what happened next and the "3" shows what happened last.

    • 5). Monitor students' work and discuss with them their reasoning for how they chose to represent the story sequentially.
