Efficacy of Anticholinergic Drugs in Asthma

Efficacy of Anticholinergic Drugs in Asthma

Five-year View

In the next few years, the results of the ongoing RCTs on the efficacy of tiotropium in large samples of asthmatic patients will be available, and these data might confirm the indications for the use of tiotropium in asthma. Furthermore, these studies will clarify the positioning of tiotropium in the asthma management, whether on top of all the pre-existing asthma therapy, or as an alternative to LABA, also considering the current attention of regulatory authorities (like the US FDA), on extensive use of LABA in asthma. Furthermore, we probably will have other data, collected on specific asthma phenotypes, such as smoking asthmatics, obese asthmatics and noneosinophilic asthmatics, which may allow us to better tailor the choice of the anti-asthma drugs.
