- 1). Accumulate all of the necessary tax documentation. To make the tax filing process go smoothly, it is best to locate all of your paperwork and have it in one place before you start.
- 2). Determine how you are going to file your taxes. There are many ways in which a taxpayer can file taxes. You have the option of downloading your state tax forms and instructions from the Department of Tax and Finances website for your state. Or you can elect to use one of the software programs, such as TaxCut or TurboTax. If you opt for the software, be sure to purchase the federal and state programs. Not all software packages include the state filing option. If neither of those options appeals to you, you can contact an accountant or a tax preparation service and pay them to prepare and file your state taxes.
- 3). File your federal taxes first. After you've decided the method for filing your taxes, complete your federal taxes first. Most state tax filing forms ask for information from your federal taxes. Be prepared by doing them first. Completing your federal taxes first not only makes state filing easier, but also once you've conquered the federal tax filing, doing your state taxes will seem a whole lot easier.
- 4). Complete your state taxes prior to the April 15th deadline. If you think you won't be able to complete your taxes by the deadline, seek a filing extension. You can either call your state department of tax and finance or visit the website to get the necessary forms for a state tax filing extension.
- 5). Submit the amount of taxes owed by April 15th whether or not you file for a state tax extension. If you are granted an extension to submit your tax forms, you are not granted an extension to pay the amount of taxes owed. Not paying your taxes on time will result in penalties and interest charges.
