The streetfighter bike of many names, the Honda CB900F, also known as the CBR919, the CB919 and the Hornet, gets at least some of its names from its 919 cubic centimeter engine. The engine was taken from the CBR900 of 1998 and 1999, and the bike was introduced by Honda to take advantage of the growing popularity of naked bikes at the time. - The CBR900-lifted engine has four cylinders inline with four valves per cylinder. The valves are controlled by a double overhead cam system. The fuel induction system uses PGM-FI (Programmed Fuel Injection) with a manually-controlled enrichment system.
The bore and stroke of the engine is 2.8 by 2.3 inches (71.0 by 58.0 mm), with bore being the diameter of the engine cylinder opening and the stroke is the total distance the piston travels up and down. The engine has a compression ratio of 10.8 to one. Compression ratio is the ratio of the volume between the piston and cylinder head before and after a compression stroke. - The 2003 CB900F has a #530 O-ring-sealed chain final drive system to transfer engine power to the rear wheel and six manual gears.
The bike has a steel frame that is similar to the Honda 600's frame. The suspension in the front of the bike uses non-adjustable cartridge forks of 1.7-inch (43 mm) diameter and 4.7 inches (120 mm) of travel. The rear suspension uses a single shock with 5 inches (127 mm) of travel and is adjustable for pre-load.
The front brake is a dual disc of 11.7 inches (296 mm) diameter with four piston calipers and the rear brake is a single disc of 9.4 inches (240 mm) diameter with one piston caliper. The front tire is 120/70-17 size and the rear tire is 180/55-17 size. They are mounted on aluminum alloy wheels of 17-inch diameter front and rear. - The bike weighs 427 lbs. dry and has a wheelbase of 57.5 inches. It is 83.7 inches long and 29.5 inches wide, with a seat height of 31.3 inches. The fuel tank holds five gallons of fuel.
- The bike, with its five gallon tank, has an average fuel consumption of 37 miles per gallon. The tank range is 145 miles.
The 2003 CB900F has a top speed of 135 miles per hour and can cover a quarter mile from standing in 11.1 seconds. The engine produces 110 horsepower at 9,000 engine revolutions per minute and a torque of 67.9 ft.-lbs. at 6,500 rpm.
