- Connecticut is one of the smaller states in New England. Although heavily urbanized, the state hosts a large variation in its landscape with a mountainous and hilly north and a coastal south. Connecticut's climate is relatively temperate. These conditions allow the state to host a range of spiders that are unique to such geographical characteristics.
- The orb weaver, or "Araneus spp.", is so-named due to the shape of its webs. The spider will sit in the middle of an orb-shaped web while waiting to trap prey. If the spider happens to not be in the web it will use a strand as a transmitter that monitors any movements within the web. The spider typically resides in grass or under porches. The spiders often re-spin a new web every night. Leaving these spiders in your home is a natural way of reducing mosquitoes. Lengths range from 0.24 to 0.79 inches with females typically larger than males. The spider is orange, brown, yellow and black in color.
- These are small spiders that range from 0.12 to 0.39 inches. They are typically brown-ish black, and the females will have a red hourglass-shaped pattern on the abdomen. Females are larger than males. The spider gets its name because the female will kill and devour the male after mating. Although the spider is typically shy and avoids humans, the bite of the female black widow is extremely toxic. It is recomended to seek medical attention straight away if you are bitten by one of these spiders. The scientific name is "Latrodectus mactans."
- This spider does not make webs and instead stalks and jumps for its prey, as the name suggests. Its scientific name is "Platycryptus undatus." Ranging from 0.39 to 0.51 inches in length, it has a patterned tan, white, black and gray body with striped legs. This spider is known to be relatively curious and friendly to humans. It may bite if handled inappropriately, however.
- These spiders, also known as "Steatoda triangulosa," have long legs relative to the rest of its body and have a triangular-shaped pattern on the abdomen--hence the spider's name. Lengths range from 0.12 to 0.24 inches and they are brown and black in color. The spider is found commonly in households and will typically dwell in darker areas. It feeds off other insects and spiders. It has poor eyesight and hence uses the vibrations of its cobweb when detecting prey.
