- 1). Seal the granite by washing it first with warm water, letting it dry and then applying a granite sealer in accordance with the sealer's instructions because sealers can vary from each other.
- 2). Use a cutting board when cutting food. This prevents the knife from scratching the granite surface and also prevents bacteria from meat and other food products from seeping into the granite, especially if the counter isn't sealed.
- 3). Clean the granite regularly with warm water and a few drops of mild dish detergent. Avoid using abrasive chemical cleaners because they can badly discolor the stone.
- 4). Keep oils, mustard and wine from coming into contact with granite countertops because they will likely result in staining that is difficult to remove.
- 5). Place a cloth pad underneath any hot pots or pans before placing them on the counter to prevent both heat damage and scratching of the granite. Granite resists heat damage nicely, but this still helps you keep the granite healthier longer.
