- Under Florida law, owners of motor vehicles with at least four wheels are required to carry Personal Injury Protection Insurance. Two-wheeled vehicles, such as scooters and motorcycles, are exempt from this requirement.
- Florida requires that all drivers maintain a minimum of $10,000 personal injury protection (PIP) and $10,000 property damage liability (PDL) coverage. This requirement remains in place as long as the driver is in possession of a valid Florida license plate. The issuing insurance company must be licensed by the Florida Department of Financial Services.
- In the event of an accident, Florida PIP insurance covers the insured driver, children of the insured, other members of the insured's household, and certain passengers who lack PIP insurance who do not own a vehicle. Passengers who are covered under their own PIP policy receive coverage from their policy. PIP also extends to the children of the insured if they suffer an injury while riding on a school bus. Last, a PIP policy covers the insured while walking or riding a bike if injured in a crash involving a motor vehicle.
- Referred to as BIL Insurance, Bodily Injury Liability Insurance is a component of Florida's PIP requirements. It covers drivers who sustain serious and permanent injury or kill other people when responsible for a crash involving their own vehicle. This coverage also pays for injuries caused by the insured or members of the insured's family who reside in the same home, even if they were driving someone else's vehicle. It may also cover others who drive the insured's vehicle with their permission.
- Legal defense fees may be covered under the BIL insurance coverage, if an insured is sued by others involved in an accident where the insured is deemed to be at fault.
