2013 Victoria Bowmann, PhD
When one's favorite hobby brings on pain, there can be relief and resolution whether it is addressed right away or later when the pain just doesn't seem to stop on it's own. The pleasure in our lives is doing and enjoying the things we love, no matter what they are. Perhaps we need to modify our actions, however we can still enjoy the activity.
Golf is no different. Perhaps one's handicap isn't as low as it was a few years ago, but the joy remains. Ron called one afternoon, as he was in the area visiting family, playing golf and attending the Arabian horse show. Unfortunately, he had played more golf than usual, had swung harder than he usually did as the course was quite a long one, and had thrown out a rib on the 15th hole. What a bummer!
This old injury occasionally flared but it was especially frustrating because it happened on vacation, away from the chiropractor and massage therapist who knew just how to help. Fortunately his family knew of the Bowmann's Bowen technique and made that phone call for help.
In my practice I have found that putting more than one method together can often get a person in the game more quickly. I chose to use two techniques for Ron. The first was a device that has low level lazer light with electric micro stimulation. I worked for 6 minutes with this hybrid device on the low and mid-back where the rib pain was located.
After that, I chose to use the Bowen technique since it has the capacity of unraveling the stress and trauma of the injury. While it wasn't an injury like an impact from of collision, it was a strain nevertheless. Many times we think that we have to be hit to the hurt, when in fact, injury can occur many different ways.
The gentle plucking motion of this treatment allows the muscle to carry the vibration throughout the muscle group including the ligaments and tendons that are holding the muscles to the bones and structure of the body. It's much like plucking a guitar string and allowing it to vibrate indefinitely. The vibration continues even when one's ears don't hear the sound.
There are definite patterns to this technique, however advanced practitioners also are educated in additional movements to follow the direction of the pain and treat the corresponding areas. While many will say, It doesn't feel like you are doing very much! Ron would argue with you.
He left my office not feeling much better but with hope. I asked him to relax for the evening and take it easy. Please give me a call within three days to let me know how he was feeling. Well, the morning of day three I received his call, Dandy Doctor he said, You are amazing! When I woke up the following morning, I was so much better. My rib went back into place on it's own about 6 o'clock that night, and now I'm as good as new.
He did a follow up treatment before he left for home and we put together a game plan for him to add the device to his toolbox for health and find a practitioner skilled in Bowen for his health team. While I can't promise him to improve his golf score, at least he can continue to enjoy his hobby.
Feeling good is something one might take for granted, or forget what it's like. And feeling bad often becomes a way of life that shouldn't be. Quality of life is so important to each of us, and having the right knowledge of what to do and how to do it, can bring relief and often resolution to those daily aches and pains.
