On March 4, 2008, Lauren Burk's nude body was found along side a rural road about four miles from Auburn University where she was a freshman. She had been shot in the back. Her car was found burning in a parking lot back on campus. A $10,000 reward was issued in the case of the 18-year-old from Marietta, Georgia.

A man who abducted an Auburn University freshman and gunpoint, shot her and left her body beside a rural road has been sentenced to die by lethal injection.

Lee County Circuit Judge Jacob Walker ignored an unanimous vote by the jury and sentenced Courtney Lockhart to death.

A 23-year-old Alabama man has been arrested after a brief car and foot chase and charged with the murder, robbery and attempted rape of Lauren Burk, a freshman at Auburn University. Courtney Lockhart was arrested in Phenix City, about 30 miles from the Auburn campus.
