- When putting together a sandwich for lunch or boiling some pasta for dinner, always select a whole grain or multi-grain option. Simple sugars and carbohydrates will not only cause gas and bloating, they will also slow your body down. People who eat white bleached bread will need more sleep and will suffer from fatigue throughout the day. If the bloating doesn't make your pants too small, the lack of exercise and compromised metabolism certainly will.
- Next time you are at the grocery store, stock up on yogurt instead of your regular snack foods. Yogurt is probiotic. This means it contains active cultures and aids with digestion. Combine your yogurt with granola at lunch, or make a daily digestive health smoothie with yogurt, fruit and ice blended together.
- Always choose fresh produce over canned. A can of corn contains salt or other preservatives, all which lead to uncomfortable bloating or intestinal gas. The majority of fruits and vegetables are easily digested and will not cause any problems. A few vegetables should still be avoided, such as broccoli, cauliflower and beans.
- Drinking a hot liquid helps your stomach to "cook" problem foods more easily. Even if you don't have any tea on hand, mixing cinnamon with hot water can do the trick. The best teas to eradicate bloating and gas are chamomile, peppermint and ginger. Drink a cup with every meal to experience the full effect.
- No matter how well you eat, you might still suffer from a bloated stomach or irritable intestines if you aren't chewing and swallowing correctly. Bloating and gas can result simply from extra air in your digestive system. If your mother hasn't yet gotten through to you about talking with your mouth full, today is the day to change those bad manners. Chew thoroughly and eat slowly. As a reward for your new good behavior, try on some new skinny jeans right after dinner.
