- HBP directly impacts your body in several ways. The AHA notes that the high force of blood flow associated with this condition can cause vascular weakness and scarring, an increased risk of blood clots, plaque build-up and an overloaded circulatory system.
- HBP is the greatest stroke risk factor, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). HBP can cause bleeding in the brain and narrow arterial passageways leading to the brain; both of these can trigger stroke.
- If HBP causes the oxygen supply to your heart to slow, chest pains known as angina can occur. If the oxygen supply stops, the result is a heart attack, points out the NHLBI.
- The NHLBI reports that HBP can cause kidney damage. HBP hinders the kidneys' ability to remove waste from the body resulting in a collection of fluid and waste that can lead to kidney failure.
- A lesser known health effect of HBP happens when the disorder causes blood vessels in your eyes to bleed or burst. This can result in blurred vision or even blindness, says the NHLBI.
