- Dogs with Cushing's disease drink a lot of water and eat less than normal. They also have thin or missing fur, potbellies, abnormal gaits, and may be lethargic.
- According to Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine, adrenal gland malfunctions can be caused by adrenal gland tumors or problems with the pituitary glands (see Resources). The pituitary gland is located in the brain and regulates the adrenal system.
- A veterinarian will perform a physical exam to determine if hair loss or an extended abdomen is present. Blood and urine tests are performed to find cortisol levels.
- According to Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine, the only known risk factor is prescribed steroid use. The steroids may damage the adrenal gland (see Resources).
- If the cause of Cushing's is an adrenal gland tumor, surgery is the preferred course of treatment. For dogs with pituitary gland malfunctions, prescription medication is available to regulate the production of cortisol.
