- Gastrointestinal effects of beta-blockers include diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting. Beta-blockers may also cause blurred vision, fatigue, muscle cramps, sexual dysfunction, and shortness of breath.
- Cardiovascular effects of beta-blockers include slow heart rate, reduced blood pressure, and an increased risk of heart failure or heart blockage in susceptible individuals.
- Beta-blockers may affect the nervous system with headache, depression, confusion, dizziness, nightmares and hallucinations.
- Beta-blockers may cause an increase or decrease in blood glucose levels. In diabetic patients, these drugs may mask the symptoms of hypoglycemia.
- Never stop taking beta-blockers suddenly without talking to you doctor first. Sudden withdrawal may cause worsened angina (chest pain), heart attack or sudden death.
