Uninstalling McAfee From the Registry

    • 1). Click the "Start" button and type "regedt32" into the search field. Press the "Enter" key. This applies to Windows Vista and Windows 7. If you are using Windows XP, click "Run" in the Start menu, type "regedt32" and click "OK."

    • 2). Click the arrow beside the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder on the left panel of the Registry Editor. This produces a list of the folders it contains. Click the arrow next to the SOFTWARE folder. Scroll through the contents of this folder and select the MICROSOFT folder. Choose the WINDOWS folder from this folder, then choose the CURRENTVERSION sub folder. Click the arrow next to the UNINSTALL folder.

    • 3). Right-click the "Uninstall" folder in the left pane of the window and select "Export." Choose "Desktop" from the left pane of the "Export Registry File" box and type "Uninstall" in the "File name" field. Click the "Save" button.

    • 4). Click each key in the "Uninstall" folder on the left pane to locate the key for the McAfee program. When you click on a key, information for the associated program will be displayed on the right side of the box. Check information listed next to "Display Name."

    • 5). Right-click the McAfee key and click "Delete." Click "Yes" to confirm deletion. Select "Exit" from the file menu to close the Registry Editor.

    • 6). Go to "Uninstall Program" to verify that the antivirus program has been deleted. Click the "Start" button, select "Control Panel" and click the "Uninstall Program" link. In Windows XP, select "Add or Remove Programs" from the Control Panel. Browse through the available programs to ensure that the McAfee program is not listed.

    • 7). Delete the Uninstall file you saved on the desktop if the process has been successful. If you accidentally deleted the wrong program, then double-click the uninstall file to restore it.
