- During the 1997 model-year, Saturn offered an array of vehicles known as the S-Series. The S-Series was broken down into three distinct types of vehicles: sedans, wagons and coupes. The sedans were denoted with an SL, wagons were designated with an SW and coupes carried the SC marquee. In 1997, all S-Series were powered by one of two available 1.9-liter engines.
- Available in the base and level 1 trims of every 1997 Saturn S-Series was a 100 horsepower, 1.9-liter inline, four-cylinder (I-4) engine. This engine produced 114 ft.-lbs. of torque at 2,400 RPM and reached maximum horsepower at 5,000 RPM.
- Every level 2 trim S-Series, during the 1997 Saturn model-year, was powered by a 124-horsepower, 1.9-liter I-4 engine. This engine produced 122 ft.-lbs. of torque at 4,800 RPM and reached maximum horsepower at 5,600 RPM.
- Both engines were 1.9-liters and had four cylinders, but there were several differences in design that altered torque. The 100-horsepower engine had eight valves, a single overhead camshaft and a compression ratio of 9.3:1. The 124-horsepower variant had 16 valves, a dual overhead camshaft and a compression ratio of 9.5:1.
