- Aquatic turtles species such as the painted turtle, bog turtle, mud turtle and red-eared slider eat many types of things, including plants, fish, snails, crayfish, insects, snakes, and even other turtles.
- The alligator snapping turtle is an example of an aquatic turtle that eats fish, lured to its watery hiding place by special means. The alligator snapper has an appendage in its mouth that resembles a worm, which it "wiggles" to bring a fish within range of its powerful jaws.
- The common map turtle has a size difference between the sexes, with the females being larger than the males. This translates to bigger and more powerful jaws for the females, which then can crack open crayfish and mollusks to supplement their diet.
- According to the University of Florida's IFAS Extension website, aquatic turtles that consume mostly plants have certain effects on their ecosystem. These turtles can make it difficult for some plant species to regenerate and ruin efforts to transplant certain species.
- Some types of turtles, like the snapping turtle, will scavenge for a meal when the opportunity presents itself, eating carrion such as drowned mammals, dead birds and decaying plant matter.
