It is now widely accepted that fossil fuel consumption and global warming need to be addressed quickly and on a large scale. Vegetable oil is a viable solution since any diesel engine can be converted, with a few modifications, to run on waste or pure vegetable oil.- It is possible, as of September 2009, to buy your own converter kit including a biodiesel fuel oil transfer system, pump, filter and meter online for as little as $200.
- Waste vegetable oil, or WVO, is used vegetable oil from restaurants or industrial deep fryers. Straight vegetable oil, SVO, or PPO, comes directly from the plant. Coconut and corn oil are the most prevalent.
- Damage to certain engines and the lack of widespread availability are subjects of concern and confusion. Debate remains about the viability of large scale use of vegetable oil as fuel.
