Lynchburg Community Market
The Visitor Center in downtown Lynchburg is the place to start. It provides plenty of free maps, guides and brochures as well as informed attendants who can provide more information about exploring the city from personal knowledge and experience. The Center is adjacent to the Lynchburg Community Market which has operated since 1783 and is open Monday through Saturday featuring local produce and food, arts and crafts, antiques and festivals. The charming district also features bed and breakfast inns and hotels, antique and gift shops, restaurants and bookstores in restored or renovated historic buildings. Museums of the city's history include Fort Early, Jones Memorial Library and 1808 Sandusky Union headquarters. - 2). There is much to see and do around the downtown area, including a walk to the James River along Jefferson Street and Riverfront Park. Children will enjoy Amazement Square, the Rightmire Children's Museum, a hands-on playhouse of science, culture, history, music and arts. A former warehouse, this mutli-story attraction offers hours of entertainment and education. The railroad city was a major stronghold in the Battle of Lynchburg in 1864 between Union and Confederate troops. The Visitor Center offers a narrated driving tour CD critical to that event.

Lynchburg's architectural history and beauty are represented in its seven Historic Districts: Garland Hill, Court House Hill, Daniel's Hill, Diamond Hill, Federal Hill, Rivermont and Pierce Street. These 18th and 19th century neighborhoods include Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic, Georgian and Victorian architecture. The Point of Honor Mansion by the James River is open to tours.
- 4). Take a drive around town to visit attractions listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the 1905 Academy of Fine Arts and Music Theatre, the 1791 Miller-Claytor House and Garden, 1815 Point of Honor Mansion, Thomas Jefferson's 1806 Poplar Forest plantation, the Old City Cemetery Museums & Arboretum and the poet Anne Spencer's House and Garden.
