Flying at High Altitudes With Infants

    Keep Infants Hydrated

    • The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) allows parents to bring bottles containing juice, formula or breast milk exceeding 3 oz. as long as you present them at the security checkpoint for inspection. It is important to bring adequate fluids for your infant; your baby will need adequate nourishment while he travels. Be prepared, and bring adequate nourishment for your little one.

    Diapers

    • Bring enough diapers, more than you think you'll need for your flight in your carry-on baggage. Flight delays are common, and passengers may be unable to purchase certain toiletries on the flight, including diapers. It is better to pack more than you need than not have enough. Put diapers in carry-on bags so you have access to them during the flight. Keep in mind that many planes also have diaper changing tables in the restrooms.

    Cabin Pressurization

    • One of the biggest problems infants face when they fly is cabin pressurization. They do not know how relieve the pressure in their ears. Many times if the infant is asleep this isn't an issue. However, when the plane is taking off or landing, give your infant a pacifier or a bottle. The sucking will release the pressure in her ears.

    Toys and Snacks

    • A few hours can feel like an eternity for an alert baby. Bring plenty of age-appropriate toys, books and snacks if the child is old enough for solids. Sing lullabies and songs to your baby. Your infant may be overwhelmed or over-stimulated if traveling for the first time, so make the experience as comfortable as possible for your little one.
