If your children are learning to swim you will no doubt be wondering all sorts of things about when, where and how they should be taught. There are so many myths surrounding learning to swim, we thought weâEUR(TM)d list a few and show you whether there is any truth in them or not. Kids swimming lessons are easy to enrol in but get wised up before you commit your child to a series of lessons âEUR" you need to know what you are letting them in for.
Myth One âEUR" You Have To Be Four Or Older To Learn How To Swim
Absolutely not! Kids should be used to going in the water from a very early age so donâEUR(TM)t wait until they are four. Of course the older they are the more muscle control they will have but the sooner they are introduced to the idea of swimming the better. Even if they just learn to kick their legs they are on their way to learning how to swim.
Myth Two âEUR" Once Your Child Can Swim They CanâEUR(TM)t Drown
This is wrong âEUR" nobody is safe from the risks of drowning. When your child learns how to swim they are learning how to keep afloat but other things such as currents can make the strongest swimmer come unstuck. DonâEUR(TM)t fill your children with false confidence âEUR" they always have to be careful and have respect for the water that they are swimming in. Always make sure they know what to do if they are facing trouble in the water.
Myth Three âEUR" Parents CanâEUR(TM)t Teach Their Children To Swim
Some people think that children must be taught how to swim by a trained and qualified professional. This is not the case at all âEUR" any adult that can swim can show a child how to do it. Saying that, they should be proficient in the water and have a good knowledge of first aid and health and safety. Some people choose to go with an instructor and that is fine too âEUR" whatever you feel most comfortable with.
However and whenever you decide to teach your child to swim it is a really important life skill for them to have so encourage them every step of the way and make sure they know that you are proud of their achievements. TheyâEUR(TM)ll be delighted that they are able to do it and theyâEUR(TM)ll be dying to show their skills off to their friends!
