- 1). Pick up the products you need to lubricate the hood and trunk latches on your Hyundai Sonata. You need WD-40 and an aerosol lithium grease like Pyroil White Lithium Grease. Hyundai doesn't recommend a particular brand of latch lubricant, so you can use basically any multi-purpose lubricant you want; however, lithium grease works the best, because it won't corrode your latches.
- 2). Clear the hood or trunk latch of your Hyundai Sonata using a clean rag. Make sure you wipe off any old grease that you used, as well as, any dirt and mud. Dig out any grime that has collected inside the latch assembly. You may need to use your fingers to get the deep down grime from inside the latch.
- 3). Get rid of any rust that has developed on the latch. This is very easy to do--all you have to do is sand it off with sandpaper or brush it off with a wire brush.
- 4). Determine if the integrity of the latch has been compromised, if there's a lot of rust, by seeing how much metal has been eaten away. If there's significant damage, you need to talk with your mechanic about replacing it. Treat the rusted area with WD-40.
- 5). Lubricate your hood or trunk latch using a spray on lithium grease. Spray around the edges of the latch as well as directly into the latch. Activate the latch a few times to test it. If you hear noises like squeaking or grinding, then lubricate the latch again.
