- Wood is one of the most common materials used in sewing cabinets, but it's not the only one. They can be made of a wood composite laminated in vinyl, fiberglass or other materials. Some feature large work areas, such as a quilting table, while others are meant for storage only and do not have an area to put the sewing machine.
- Sewing cabinets often feature a flat area with leg room where folks can place their sewing machines. One or both sides surrounding the flat area will frequently feature a cabinet door with shelves behind it or storage drawers. Some of the more advanced models may feature an adjustable platform for the sewing machine. The machine can be moved up and down to accommodate different sewing projects as needed.
- Sizes of sewing cabinets vary widely. Some that do not provide an area for a sewing machine can be about the size of a night stand. Those with a sewing machine area are about the size of a medium desk. Others are elaborate and contain sections that can line an entire room. Regardless of the length, the height is usually about 2 to 3 feet tall, a perfect height for someone sitting and sewing.
- Depending on the size and features of the unit, sewing cabinet prices vary widely. A small cabinet that only has drawers or shelves may be found for around $100. A medium-sized cabinet with room for a sewing machine is also fairly inexpensive, in the $200 range. A medium-sized cabinet with adjustable machine platform will cost at least $300. Cabinet units that line an entire wall or room can get into the several thousand dollar range.
- Because some cabinets may feature little cubby holes, drawers and spool holders, they can also be used for storing other craft supplies. Those who don't do enough sewing to merit use of a whole sewing cabinet will be glad to find it can do double duty. The small compartments are also ideal for stowing screws, nails and other hardware items. Some will have wheels, making it even more convenient to move into an area to work on a project and then roll out of the way when not in use.
- Local stores may not specialize in selling sewing machine cabinets. People can check at larger department stores or sewing and craft shops. A great range of sewing machine cabinets are sold online (see Resources below).
When ordering online, keep the cost of shipping in mind. Most will have hefty shipping charges of at least $50 because they are hefty units. Also keep in mind that assembly will most likely be required for any sewing cabinets ordered over the Internet.
