Galena is a historic town of around 3,200 people, overlooking the banks of the Galena River. In spite of its small size, there's a lot to do. Visitors can tour the home of Civil War hero, Ulysses S. Grant, or visit the Old Blacksmith Shop, an authentic 1897 blacksmith shop with working forges and original tools and equipment. The Galena History Museum has Civil War and steam boating exhibits. There are two different ghost tours through local cemeteries, historic carriage rides, river cruises, trolley tours, three wineries and 10 golf courses, as well as outdoor activities like kayaking and downhill skiing. - Allen's Log Cabin Guest House is located 1.5 miles from Main Street in Galena, Illinois. Five authentic, early 1800s log cabins, standing on the boyhood estate of Civil War General Augustus Chetlain, have been retrofitted with Whirlpool tubs and wood burning fireplaces. The retreat is eco friendly and uses all natural biodegradable cleaning supplies, laundry soap and toilet paper. Low-Flow Dual-Flush toilets and Low-Flow shower heads are installed in each cabin, along with recycling bins. To conserve water, linens are only washed every four days of a guest's visit. In 2010, cabin rates started at $179 a night during the week and $199 a night during the weekend. Rates are per night, double occupancy.
