Life Science Clusters in the U.S. Western States

Updated January 12, 2014.

The life science industry gives birth to medical supplies that help healthcare providers heal and comfort their patients.

The scientists that innovate new medications, new medical devices, and new medical supplies like to collaborate with their colleagues, not only within their immediate organization, but also across the borders of their employment.

For example, corporate researchers, medical center researchers, and university researchers want to be located near each other to mingle at lectures, symposia, and even casual opportunities.

The result of this drive for collaboration has been "the cluster". Science companies take real estate within blocks of medical institutions and universities. What they've found is that not only do the researchers collaborate, the organizations benefit by recruiting people to their teams who come from these slightly varying perspectives.

Here are where the research clusters are for your job search in the U.S. Western States.

1. Bio Med Industry Jobs in San Diego

Compared to all other clusters in the United States, San Diego has the highest percentage of its citizens employed in the life sciences sector.

The city's bio med establishments, including corporations, universities, and medical institutions, attracts an estimated $600 million every year in venture capital, and another $800 million each year from the National Institutes of Health.

2. Bio Med Industry Jobs in San Francisco Bay Area

No cluster has attracted more venture capital funding than San Francisco. The Bay Area's life science organizations attract over $2 billion each year, and when you add in the more than $1 billion annually from the NIH, you can see why there are so many research jobs in the area.

The Los Angeles and Orange Counties are among the most populous areas in the United States. They are close to each other, but also quite different. These universities are:
  • University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA)
  • UC Irvine
  • UC Santa Barbara
  • Cal Tech
  • University of Southern California (USC)

Every life science cluster gradually establishes its own identity by the type of tenants in the market that it attracts. What they specialize in tends to shape its focus.

Seattle has become one of the country's major cancer research clusters. While there is very little manufacturing done in the bio med sector in Seattle, the Puget Sound region has developed a strength in research and development.
