Preventative care is always the best way to avoid having to pay handsomely for a pound of cure, and by modifying four simple behaviors, you can improve both your smile and reduce your chance of developing chronic diseases.
The American Dental Association reported on the findings of a study released by the CDC and the German Institute of Human Nutrition.
The research indicated that individuals (men and women under) who followed four basic behaviors "were 78 percent less likely to develop chronic conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer and stroke.
" The behaviors are:
- Not Smoking, Ever!
- Exercising
- Maintaining a body mass index (BMI) under 30
- Eating Nutritious Foods
" Tobacco use, obesity and lack of exercise have long been associated with declining dental health.
23,153 German adults aged 35 to 65 participated in the study.
The CDC closely monitored them for an eight-year period and according to the ADA "Those who followed each of the four health behaviors had 93 percent reduced risk for diabetes, 81 percent lower risk for heart disease, 50 percent reduction in risk for stroke, and 36 percent lower risk for cancer.
" Study participants who only opted to follow one of the four health behaviors and also had healthy BMI level also benefited, although not as greatly.
This group of individuals experienced nearly a fifty percent decline in developing a chronic disease.
