- Much like the difference between an office suite and a word processor, an Internet security application generally includes a package of applications. Internet security suites generally offer anti-virus protection, in addition to other features like spam control, parental filtering and a firewall.
- It's a common misconception among computer users that an Internet security program is a purely "defensive" software--that is, once a virus or worm has attacked a computer, Internet security software can't track and remove it. But this isn't true. Internet security software not only features all the tracking and removal features of anti-virus software, but it also offers rootkit protection, which keeps malicious applications from taking control of your computer. An Internet security program can actually be more effective than a regular anti-virus program.
- Kaspersky and AVG offer Internet security and anti-virus software. They both offer an anti-virus application at a significant discount from the full suite due to its smaller scope and feature set.
- Buying the components of a security suite separately allows you to more directly control your computer's security, or save money by piecing together reputable freeware programs. But if you're not computer savvy, dislike managing multiple programs, or desire limiting your children's Internet access, you should consider purchasing a full suite.
