- The Secretary of State must ensure that targets for poverty reduction--based upon the proportion of children living in each of four defined levels of poverty--are met on a yearly basis. The Secretary presents an annual report to Parliament detailing successes and challenges.
- The legislation establishes a Child Poverty Commission charged with researching, advising and otherwise assisting the Secretary of State in his duties.
- According to Part 2 of the Child Poverty Act, local governments must cooperate with other authorities in compiling and publishing child poverty needs assessments for their jurisdictions. They are also charged with developing strategies for poverty reduction.
- Authorities from Scotland and Northern Ireland must present a strategy for child poverty reduction to their parliaments within one year of the passage of the British legislation.
