Making candles can at times be perilous, especially if you're not careful.
Let's face it, you're working with hot wax, and we've all poured hot wax on our skin and felt how much it hurts! I'm going to give away a few trade secrets not just in handling the wax, but also how to use dyes and fragrances! Want to become a better candle maker? Read on! Handling Dyes I cannot stress enough how important this is.
If you are careless with the dye, you can permanently stain not just clothes, but your kitchen bench, your stove type or even the cat if it happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time! Make sure you know what you are using, and always be mindful of any warnings on the packet! Also, you must always be careful to not allow the dye to get too hot.
This can result in the colour becoming imprecise, which may result in disaster! Sometimes less is more.
This is more often the case than not when it comes to the amount of dye you use.
Add dye gradually rather than all at once so that you know exactly what colour you will end up getting.
Working with fragrances Once again, the less is more rule still applies.
If you add too much fragrance, you will most likely end up damaging the candle.
Not only that, if the wax is mixed with too much fragrance, it makes it much harder to get it out of the mold, even with vegetable oil!! The three most important safety tips when making candles: Pour slowly, clean up spills immediately, and never leave wax drippings on the side of the double boiler! A tidy kitchen makes it much easier to make candles, and you always need to be careful when using such volatile material near flames.
Wouldn't want to blow up your house! Now I'm going to give you a few great tips on marketing your candles, that is, getting out in there in the community and making a name for yourself as an expert candle maker! 1.
Be unique - The best way to sell YOUR candles is to come up with something that no one else does better than you do.
2.
You don't have to have the best store to sell candles.
Flea markets are a great opportunity to sell your candles, and also to get your name out there! 3.
Create a brochure.
The big retailers do it.
It works.
So why can't you? Create a brochure to advertise your candles, and put them around places that will help you to sell them.
Bulletin boards and churches are great places to leave them.
Although these candle making tips won't prepare you for every single thing that could go wrong while making candles, and won't make you a huge profit overnight, I'm hoping they will help you to skip a couple of steps and minimise any mistakes.
Enjoy!
