How to Mount Adhesive Tape

    • 1). Research adhesive tape varieties to find the correct type for the planned application (see Resources). Double-sided mounting tape is commonly used for wall mounting and available in a variety of thicknesses and widths. Waterproof adhesive tape is durable in underwater and outdoor applications.

    • 2). Clean the mounting surface thoroughly. Use the appropriate cleaner for that surface. Dust and debris on the surface reduces adhesion and weakens the bond with the tape. If you use a wet cleaner, wait for the surface to dry before mounting the tape.

    • 3). Measure the mounting surface where the adhesive tape will be applied, using a tape measure. Reduce the length by 1 inch and lock the tape measure in place. Set the extended tape measure on a stable and flat surface such as a table or counter.

    • 4). Place the adhesive tape roll next to the tape measure and pull it out to the same length. Cut the tape from the roll with the built-in knife or a pair of scissors. Center the cut strip on the mounting surface with the adhesive side facing it.

    • 5). Press in the center of the adhesive tape strip. Continue pressing as you slowly move your fingers out to the ends of the tape. Push out trapped air bubbles where the tape is not sitting evenly, using a wallpaper roller.

    • 6). Pull the backing off the adhesive tape to expose the glue on the other side. Single-side adhesive tapes do not have a backing.
