- 1). Evaluate any credit card offers that you may have gotten through the mail. Sometimes these offers are for special rates that may not be available through other avenues. Take note of any promotional rate and period, the standard interest rate and whether there is an annual fee.
- 2). Look at a credit card comparison website to compare credit cards side by side. CardRatings.com and Creditcardguide.com allow you to compare cards by interest rate, rewards and balance transfer offers.
- 3). Check your member benefits with any organizations, such as AAA or Sam's Club, that you may be a member of. Some of these organizations offer credit cards to members with attractive rates and benefits.
- 4). View the rewards benefits of the credit card offers if you are interested in getting a rewards credit card for your second card. Some cards may offer a wide variety of rewards items, while others may only offer limited items. Also, the number of rewards points that you can earn per dollar may vary, which means that with some cards it will take longer to reach a reward than with others.
- 5). Decide how you will be using the second credit card. For example, if you will be using it for mostly gas and groceries, you may want to look for a card that gives bonus rewards for everyday purchases like that. Or if you will be using the card only for travel expenses, then you may want a card that is affiliated with a hotel or airline rewards program.
