How to Deal With Low Blood Pressure in the Elderly

    • 1). Know the problematic symptoms to look for. In many instances, low blood pressure is not serious. However, low blood pressure can be a symptom of something more serious. You should see a doctor immediately if you are suffering from any of the following symptoms: dizziness, fainting, inability to concentrate, blurred vision, shallow breathing or fatigue.

    • 2). Determine what is causing the low blood pressure. Dealing with low blood pressure often means treating the underlying cause. For example, many elderly people take medications that can cause low blood pressure. To deal with this, a doctor might change the dose of the medication or stop it entirely. Another common cause of low blood pressure in the elderly is heart failure. In this case, the doctor would treat the heart failure, usually through medication or surgery.

    • 3). Consume more salt. If the underlying cause of the blood pressure is unknown, consuming more salt might solve the problem. According to the Mayo Clinic, sodium can raise blood pressure. However, elderly people should not consume more salt without first consulting with their doctor, because excess sodium can cause heart failure in elderly individuals.

    • 4). Drink more water. Water increases blood volume and prevents dehydration, both of which are known to cause low blood pressure. According to an article published in Science Daily, researchers at Howard Florey Institute in Melbourne found that the region of the brain that predicts how much water a person needs malfunctions as people get older. Consequently, it is particularly important for elderly people to drink water even if they do not feel that they need it.

    • 5). Consider medication. Medications, such as flurocortisone, are used to treat low blood pressure in people who exhibit certain symptoms. Consult with your doctor to see if medication is right for you.
