Eric B. Hanson has been a fan of anything loud and heavy since his first experience with Metallica’s self-titled album in the early 1990s and has been happily broadening his palette ever since. After learning to shoot black and white film in high school, he developed an aesthetic around lighting extremes perfectly suited to the vagaries of photographing at small venues.
A huge fan of live music and resident of New York City, he’s written and photographed for About.com and directly for friends’ bands as a way to immerse himself as deeply as possible in NYC’s multi-level music scene.
Education:
During the work week, Eric solves business and technical challenges as a product manager for Yahoo!. He has a Bachelor of Arts in History and Music from Skidmore College and a Masters in Business Administration from Baruch College, City University of New York.
From Eric B. Hanson:
While I’ve had an interest in photography since high school, I particularly enjoy photographing live music. Getting up close and personal with the performers and their actions, trying to capture the most interesting actions, all while solving for the technical challenges of shooting in lighting extremes: it combines everything I love about live music and photography.
Metal has some of the most energetic and visually beguiling performers of any type of music so as a fan and a photographer I’m always excited to see a metal band perform and try to capture some of the energy they project.
