How to Turn Your Basement Into a Home Theatre

    • 1). Clean your basement. Get rid of all the junk that has accumulated. Now would be a really good time for that garage or yard sale -- the money can go toward the supplies you need for your project. Be sure to sweep away all of the dirt and cobwebs as well.

    • 2). Survey your area. If you have a finished basement, meaning one that's insulated with flooring and finished walls, then you're a step ahead. If your basement isn't finished, then you need to have it finished. Install drywall or paneling and some type of flooring, such as tile or carpeting.

    • 3). Visit stores and pick out the type of theater equipment you want in your home theater. This way, you will know what kind of wiring you need ahead of time. Be aware of where you want the equipment placed and what effect you're going for.

    • 4). Hire an electrician to install the wiring for your home theater. If you know how, run the necessary wiring yourself.

    • 5). Paint the walls after the wiring and outlets have been put into place.

    • 6). Move your theater equipment into place, connecting all cables and cords. Make sure everything works correctly. Any subscription television services need to be installed at this point.

    • 7). Decorate your new home theater room with wall hangings, furniture and cool movie theater props.
