Tangram is an ancient Chinese game consisting of a variety of shapes--two large right triangles, one medium right triangle, two small right triangles, one small square and one parallelogram--placed different ways to create images. Tangrams allow kids to become familiar with geometric shapes as they learn classification of the shapes, spatial rotation and the vocabulary required for positioning the shapes. Children of all ages can enjoy tangrams if appropriate tangram sets are chosen. - Tangram games can be purchased in kits approved for different age groups. Choices include magnetized, wood and plastic versions. For younger children, keep in mind the size of the shapes as well as sharp angles for safety reasons. Prices depend on the kind of set you choose. For instance, lesser-expensive versions may not come with containers. Higher-end versions made out of handcrafted wood or stone make for nice gifts.
