How to Compare Rail Travel

    Services

    • In the United States, the only cross-country train is Amtrak. However, if you are traveling abroad, you have a number of choices of train lines varying from Virgin Rail to Eurostar.

    Itinerary

    • Use online itineraries to compare prices. Most train services allow you to book tickets online. Change the dates on the calendar on the different websites to when you are traveling. Look at the rates presented and decide the cheapest rate. Consider what amenities are included with the ticket, such as sleeping accommodations and meals, when comparing prices.

    Discounts

    • Discount passes may be available for extended travel. For example, in Europe you can buy Eurail Passes that save you money when you travel often by train. Amtrak offers rail passes. If you are just going from one city to another and back, this may not be ideal. However, if you are traveling multiple times by train within three months, it could save you money.

    Long Distance

    • If you are traveling a long distance by train, you should consider the amenities offered with your travel package. For example, with the Orient-Express you can purchase inclusive travel including hotels, air travel, attraction tickets and meals. The Trans-Siberian Railway is similar in that it crosses multiple continents and countries during travel. Both of these train routes can be booked online.
