We all need some sort of hot water system to get hot water to our homes. Nobody likes a cold shower so it's important to ensure you have your hot water system working. Occasionally, things happen and our hot water systems need replacing, so then you need to make a choice about what system you want to choose. Here is some information on gas hot water systems to help you make your decision.
Gas hot water system burn either natural gas delivered via a piped network or LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), which is usually bottled.
Storage heaters use a gas burner which is located under the storage tank to heat the water. Most hot water system have a pilot flame which will burn continuously and lights the main burner when it's required. Some heat is lost through the walls of the tank so the heaters are required to burn gas regularly to keep the water at a desired temperature. Well insulated tanks will have lower storage losses.
Hot water systems should be set at a temperature of atleast 60°C to kill dangerous germs.
So what choices do you have when choosing your hot water system?

All gas hot water systems except gas-boosted solar systems have an energy star label - similar to the energy label on electrical appliances. These will tell you how efficient that product is. To compare the energy use of gas storage and instantaneous gas hot water systems, check the star rating label. The more stars, the less gas used and the lower the operating costs. This also means reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
