Side Effects of Logynon

    Function

    • Logynon works by preventing ovulation. It accomplishes this by using hormones to make your body think ovulation has already occurred. Your ovaries, thinking an egg has been released, do not release an egg. An egg must be released for fertilization to occur.

    Effects

    • Side effects include nausea, vomiting, weight changes, a rise in blood pressure, gallstones, the development of blood clots, skin reactions, depression, headaches, and a decreased sex drive.

    Benefits

    • Beneficial side effects of Logynon include reduction in acne, reduced menstrual bleeding, and improvement in premenstrual stress.

    Warning

    • Some side effects are serious and a doctor should be contacted immediately. Serious side effects are severe headache, sudden visual disturbance, pain in the calf, and an unexplained shortness of breath.

    Considerations

    • Logynon should not be used while breastfeeding or in women with a history of heart valve disease. It should also not be used by women who have ever had a blood clot in a vein, as it can exacerbate this condition.
