Moon Sand, a product that feels like wet beach sand, can change between its soft and hard states without losing any of its properties. In addition to working with Moon Sand with your hands, you can shape it in a variety of other ways. According to the Rocky Mountain Sand Crafts website, you can sculpt, bake or paint Moon Sand without worrying that it will dry out. - Shape Moon Sand using plastic forms or molds as you would regular sand, as suggested by the Irresistible Ideas for Play Based Learning website. Fill a mold with Moon Sand, packing it tightly. Quickly turn the mold over, and lay it on a flat surface. Gently tap the mold before lifting it up to release the Moon Sand. Make more complex creations by stacking molds of different shapes and sizes. Another option involves pressing the outside of a form onto a flattened area of Moon Sand to imprint a design.
- The Rocky Mountain Sand Craft website describes a process for making Moon Sand suitable for carved sculptures. Remove Moon Sand from the storage container, and place it in the oven. Heat the Moon Sand for one hour at 250 degrees, and then wait for it to cool inside the oven. The baked Moon Sand will have hardened into a substance that you can carve or sculpt. You can soften and reuse any excess Moon Sand you carve away.
- You can preserve your Moon Sand creations, according to Delta of Sweden, one of the manufacturers of Moon Sand. Paint a thin layer of Delta Fix over your completed sculpture. When dry, Delta Fix acts as a non-porous surface that allows you to paint your sculpture with tempera paints. To reuse the preserved Moon Sand, peel off the coating of Delta Fix and mold a new creation.
