Facebook & Twitter, or the micro blogging sites, are fast gaining ascendancy in the race of communication channels. People are spending more & more time on these sites and compromising on other mediums. Does that mean end of the road for older mediums like blogs, or is there enough space for all to survive together?
There have been many studies and statistics that advocate the opinion that the days of blogs are limited. Strong references show how avid bloggers are changing loyalties and falling in love with the new social networks. There is no denying these claims. I agree with all of them, but what I don't buy is that blogs will give in to the pressure put on it by these sites. I think blog have certain unmatched advantages which will make it remain a prominent medium.
The biggest advantage with blogs is that they are your own properties. You can write what you want, how you want and how much you want. There is no limitation as such. With Facebook and Twitter you are always finding ways around the strict rules, specially twitter where character limitation can seriously hinder your thought expression. Moreover, these sites continuously keep updating their guidelines making you dependant on them. Blogs, on the other hand, are totally your medium. It's a huge advantage which will never change.
Also the audience for blogs is slightly a different one. If I may say, blog readers are more the intellectual kinds while Facebook & Twitter followers are more of casual audience. It is a fine line but if understood properly can be the defining factor while choosing what to say where.
Blogs are a key ingredient in boosting the search engine ranking of your website by enabling back-links and content updates. Micro blogging sites are rarely a contributor to this cause. Therefore, blogs will still remain the favorite with SEO experts.
All the above, plus emotional attachment, habit etc. all these factors make blog an independent identity that has surely been hit hard by micro blogging sites but not hard enough to knock it of its feet.
