How to Unstick Stuck Wooden Windows

    • 1). Examine the seams of windows that have been painted. If it appears the paint is preventing the window from opening, carefully cut a line along the edge of the window with a utility knife. Be sure to cut through all places where the paint from the window and frame are fused together.

    • 2). Check on the inside and outside of the window for any nails, screws or other obstructions that may be preventing it from opening. An improperly driven trim fastener may be sticking into the window frame. Remove any obstructions you find.

    • 3). Hook a pry bar under the window and insert a small piece of wood between the bar and the sill. Then lever the bar against the wood and try to pry the window open. Don't overdo this or you may end up damaging the window sill or frame, or breaking the glass.

    • 4). Use a small hammer to tap along the edges of the frame to unstick them if you can't pry the window open. Set the scrap wood against the frame and tap with a hammer, being careful not to tap too hard nor too closely to the window to avoid breaking the glass.

    • 5). Spray lubricant from the top of the window down between the edge of the window and the frame if you can't dislodge it by tapping. Wait about 10 minutes, then try to pry the window open again.

    • 6). Run a dehumifier in the room for 24 to 48 hours if the window is still stuck and you suspect the cause may be swelling of the wood because of moisture.

    • 7). Remove the window and reframe the opening if you still can't open the window. It may be stuck because the house has settled and the framing has sheared out of square.
