How to Rebuild a Starter for a 1986 Honda Nighthawk Motorcycle

    • 1). Place the starter on a shop rag atop the workbench. Loosen and remove the long stainless steel bolts that hold the end cap in place using a metric nut driver. Set the bolts aside.

    • 2). Tap the sides of the end cap with a rubber mallet to unseat the ring gasket between the cap and the starter casing. If necessary, insert the tip of a screwdriver into the seam and twist the handle to unseat the gasket. Pull the end cap off the starter casing and set the cap aside. Discard the ring gasket.

    • 3). Place a shop rag over the starter sprocket to protect your hand, or wear a work glove. Grip the end of the starter firmly with one hand. Pull the casing away from the end of the starter to expose the armature. Use the mallet or screwdriver if necessary to unseat the ring gasket at this end of the unit. Set the casing aside. Discard the ring gasket.

    • 4). Remove the clips on the solenoid plate retainer ring with a screwdriver. Discard the clips. Remove the retainer ring and set it to the side. Pull the solenoid plate and brushes assembly off the end of the armature and discard it. Slide the old washers and copper bushing off the end of the armature and discard these.

    • 5). Clean the armature with spray contact cleaner and wipe it dry with a shop rag. Slide the new bushing and washers onto the end of the armature.

    • 6). Position the new solenoid plate at the end of the armature with the brushes facing out. Spread the bushes open by hand and slide the plate onto the end of the armature. If necessary, ask an assistant to hold the starter as you do this. Attach the retainer ring around the plate using the new clips.

    • 7). Slide the new ring gasket over the armature and against the end of the starter. Slide the casing over the solenoid plate and against the ring gasket.

    • 8). Put the remaining ring gasket on the inside face of the end cap. Push the end cap in place against the casing. Insert the saved stainless steel bolts through the end cap and thread them into the opposite end of the starter. Tighten the bolts with the nut driver.
