- There are several common side effects that can occur as a result of Aldara. They are usually not considered to be harmful since they tend to go away as the skin and body gets used to the medicine. However, if they worsen or do not go away, medical attention might be required. These side effects include backache, diarrhea, headache and exhaustion, as well as any of the following where the medication was applied: mild drainage, tiny sores, skin color changes, burning, moderate pain, itching, tenderness, swelling, dryness, redness, flaking and thickening or hardening skin.
- There are several serious side effects that are also linked to Aldara and that require emergency medical attention. These include vaginal swelling or pain, swollen lymph glands, muscle weakness or pain, irregular heartbeat, chest ache, chills, fever, sore throat, nausea, pain, irritation and problems with urination, as well as any of these where the medication was applied: blistering, bleeding, or ulcers. Severe cases of oozing and sores can also be dangerous side effects of Aldara.
- Allergic reactions can be triggered by Aldara and should be treated immediately. Some signs of allergic reaction to Aldara are chest tightness, persistent itching, hives, trouble breathing, skin rash, and swelling of the tongue, mouth, lips or face
- Aldara can cause sun sensitivity, so if you are taking the medicine you should avoid sunlamps, tanning booths and extended exposure to sunlight. Protective attire and sunblock should be worn when in direct sunlight.
