- 1). Lift the tailgate of the 2002 Trailblazer. Place a 5- or 6-foot length of board vertically between the ground and the tailgate. The board will act as a structural support as you replace the support shocks.
- 2). Remove the small cap from the bottom of the support shocks, using a flat head screwdriver. The caps lock the shocks onto the ball-like pivot joint at the top and bottom of each shock. Remove the shock from the lower mount by prying it away from the mounting joint with a flat head screwdriver.
- 3). Remove the small cap from the top of the support shocks, using a flat head screwdriver. Pry the shocks completely free of the Trailblazer, using a flat head screwdriver. Remove and discard the old support shocks.
- 4). Install the top end of one of the support shocks onto the top joint. Use a hammer to gently tap the shock onto the joint if necessary. The top end is the fat end of the shock, not the skinny, shiny end. Repeat this step to install the support shock top end onto the other side of the Trailblazer. Install locking caps onto both top ends using a hammer to gently tap the caps into place if necessary.
- 5). Align the lower end of one of the support shocks with the lower mounting joint. Install the support shock onto the mounting joint by hand. Use a hammer gently tap the shock onto the joint if necessary. Perform this step on the opposite side of the Trailblazer to install the bottom end of the support shock. Install the locking caps onto the bottom ends of both shocks by hand, using a hammer to gently tap them into place if necessary.
- 6). Remove the length of wood from between the tailgate and ground. Test the lift support and holding support of the new shocks once or twice before closing the tailgate.
