- 1). Remove the strings from the guitar.
- 2). Peel off 3-inch strips of masking tape and lay them perpendicular across the fingerboard. The strips should be tight against the frets and parallel with them on both sides. This is to provide protection for your fingerboard.
- 3). Pinch a small pad of steel wool between your thumb and index finger.
- 4). Pinch the fret between your thumb and index finger as you surround it with steel wool. Scrub the fret thoroughly with the steel wool until it is shiny and free of any oxidized markings. Make sure, however, that the scrubbing action is gentle. Polish every fret in this way.
- 5). Remove the tape carefully and put the strings back on your guitar.
