Honda S2000 Types

    • The Honda S2000 series lasted for ten years.Honda S2000 AP1 - 2002 s/w image by Christian Schwendemann from Fotolia.com

The S2000 was a series of roadsters produced by the Japanese motoring giant Honda. Although the different models of the S2000 retained many aesthetic characteristics, several revisions were made throughout the car's lifetime. These included changes to the engine, gearbox, suspension and interior and exterior. The two different chassis variants are known as the AP1 and AP2, but Honda also released the more powerful, stripped down Club Racer models later in the series' lifespan. Honda stopped manufacturing the S2000 range in 2009.

    AP1 (1999)

    • The first model of S2000 was released in 1999 and featured a front engine, rear-wheel-drive layout with power being delivered by a 1,997 cc engine producing upward of 237 horsepower. The engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission as opposed to the automatic gearboxes which were becoming prevalent with high-end vehicles. It also included a Torsen limited slip differential.

    AP1 (2001 & 2002)

    • Following reasonable success with the initial incarnation of the S2000 series, the 2001 model was largely unchanged, but Honda did upgrade the radio and added a digital clock to the dashboard display. For the 2002 model, Honda edited the suspension settings and replaced the previously plastic rear window with glass unit that included an electric defroster.

    AP2 (2004)

    • Honda introduced newly designed 17-inch wheels as well as Bridgestone RE-050 tires for the new AP2 for 2004. They also retuned the suspension once more in order to reduce oversteer. It was claimed that spring rates and shock absorber damping would improve stability by reducing toe-in changes under cornering loads. Brass synchronizers were replaced with carbon fiber in line with weight-saving measures. Perhaps more noticeable were the cosmetic changes; new front and rear bumpers, revised headlight assemblies, new LED tail-lights and oval-tipped exhausts.

    S2000 CR

    • The S2000 Club Racer (CR) was designed to be a lightweight, hardcore version of the S2000 series. Changes for the CR included a lower-ratio steering rack, stiffer suspension and all-new Bridgestone Potenza RE-070 tires. Visually, it packed a revised body kit, composed of a redesigned front lip, rear bumper and a large spoiler. All of these aesthetic changes were wind-tunnel tested and claimed to reduce the overall coefficient of lift. In another effort to reduce weight and lower the center of gravity of the CR, the spare tire was omitted and air conditioning and stereo were offered only as options. It is a stripped-down version.

    S2000 CR Type-S

    • A variant of the Club Racer was released solely in Japan, known as the Type-S. This had a convertible soft top instead of the regular CR's aluminum hard-top, and it used the standard S2000 (see the AP2) Bridgestone RE-050 tires instead of the CR's upgraded RE-070s.
